Xiaomi’s New Flagship SUV Lineup Lands on Kunlun

Xiaomi EV today unveiled the Xiaomi SkyNomad Series — its first SUV built on the new Xiaomi Kunlun Platform — at a launch event in Beijing. Positioned as an intelligent, reconfigurable, large-space SUV, the lineup opens a new chapter in Xiaomi’s automotive journey and targets family buyers seeking one vehicle to cover virtually every use case. Two variants debut at pre-sale: the flagship SkyNomad N90 Max seven-seater extended-range SUV at RMB 299,900, and the mid-size SkyNomad N70 Max five-seat AWD extended-range SUV at RMB 259,900.

Design: Form Follows Space

Where traditional large SUVs finalise styling, powertrain, and chassis first and treat interior space as whatever remains, SkyNomad reverses that order. The squared-off body proportions are effectively a projection of the cabin — an SUV exterior wrapped around MPV-level interior volume. SkyNomad N90 Max measures 5,285 mm long, 1,998 mm wide, and 1,825 mm tall on a 3,080 mm wheelbase. A flat roofline maximises second- and third-row headroom, a continuous waistline stretches the profile, and a rising sill line lifts the visual centre of gravity. More than 140 aerodynamic optimisations and a standard active grille across the range deliver a drag coefficient of 0.255 on the N90 Max.

Interior: A Reconfigurable 7-Seat Living Room

SkyNomad offers 2,760 mm of total occupant space, with second-row legroom reaching up to 1.55 m. The standard completely flat cabin floor — spanning nearly 3 metres with a 2.95° slope and a maximum flat area exceeding 4.4 m² — eliminates the second-row step common to traditional large SUVs. Extra-long seat slide rails run up to 1,938 mm on the N90 Max, the longest in its class. The result is 7+N seating scenarios, including a Business Lounge Face-to-Face mode with rotating first- and second-row seats, a First-Class Mode with up to 1,550 mm of second-row legroom, a Super-Size Bed mode extending to 2,300 mm, and an Ultimate Storage Mode holding up to 24 20-inch suitcases. Up to four zero-gravity seats and a 9 L compressor refrigerator round out the package. The interior carries OEKO-TEX certification, with 95% of high-touch surfaces on the N90 series soft-wrapped across 32 m².

Colour and Personalisation

The SkyNomad Series introduces two new exterior colours — Mountain Green and Valley Blue — alongside a classic Volcanic Gray. The interior offers Cream Beige and Mocha Brown, both inspired by natural textures. N90 Max buyers can choose from standard 21-inch Prism-shaped Rims, optional 21-inch Beam-shaped Rims (luxury-oriented), or 21-inch Starburst-shaped Rims in Stealth Black (sport-oriented). Bridgestone quiet-tuned tyres come standard across the range.

Powertrain: Kunlun HyperRange EREV Tech

Xiaomi’s Kunlun HyperRange system uses a large-battery extended-range architecture with battery capacity ranging from 52 kWh to 76 kWh. SkyNomad N70 Max reaches up to 505 km of EV-only range on CLTC, the best in its class, while SkyNomad N90 Max reaches 464 km. A five-in-one SiC range-extending drive unit cuts consumption to 15.85 kWh/100 km and lifts efficiency by 2.65%. Combined with a large fuel tank, N90 Max achieves a combined range of 1,705 km — among the strongest results in the extended-range SUV segment — with depleted-battery consumption as low as 6.26 L/100 km.

Safety: 90.4% High-Strength Steel and 12 Airbags

SkyNomad N90 Max uses high-strength steel and aluminium alloy for 90.4% of its body, with 2,200 MPa ultra-high-strength steel in 16 critical locations. A 2,200 MPa embedded roll cage supports a maximum roof-crush load of nearly 14 tonnes. Twelve airbags come standard on the N90 Max, the most in its class, including dual-chamber far-side airbags in the second row and third-row side airbags paired with a 3,200 mm side curtain. Xiaomi Armor Scale Battery offers 18 layers of structural safety protection, maintaining full function — no leak, fire, or explosion — after a 500 J underbody impact, plus thermal protection across 16 layers rated for 55°C full-charge single-cell thermal runaway.

Cabin Tech: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Hyper XiaoAi

A four-in-one domain control module built on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform delivers 17% higher CPU and 100% higher AI compute versus the prior generation. Dual 5G + Wi-Fi 7 connectivity supports flagship-phone-level dual-SIM standby. A customisable 15,000-nit head-up display, a 25-speaker in-house audio system, and a 6.9-inch rear control screen enable full-cabin command. Xiaomi Hyper XiaoAi can switch among 11 cabin layout modes via a single voice command. Assisted-driving hardware is class-leading too: 700 TOPS of onboard compute, integrated forward-facing LiDAR, 4D mmWave radar, anti-glare cameras, and rear LiDAR on N90 series with ranging precision to 2 cm.

Our Take

The Xiaomi SkyNomad Series is one of the most ambitious SUV launches in the EV space this year — and the most credible sign yet that Xiaomi EV intends to compete not on price alone, but on platform engineering. The Kunlun architecture’s commitment to interior space, the flat floor across all trims, and the sheer configurability of the cabin read like a direct answer to the chronic complaints buyers have about large SUVs: cramped third rows, uneven cargo, and limited flexibility. It also leans hard on Xiaomi’s core strength — vertically integrated hardware and software — with its own domain controller, audio system, battery pack factory, and AI assistant all in-house.

From a Malaysian perspective, this is interesting but distant. Xiaomi EV sales remain confined to mainland China for now, with no official export timeline for the SkyNomad Series. That said, Xiaomi’s existing footprint in Malaysia — strong smartphone, wearables, and AIoT share — suggests the brand is well-positioned to introduce EVs locally if it ever chooses to. For now, Malaysian buyers who want a similar value-and-space proposition will need to look at alternatives like the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i, Proton eMas 7, or Chery Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV. The SkyNomad reads less like a product launch and more like a thesis statement: Xiaomi is here to build cars the way it builds phones — aggressively priced, deeply integrated, and engineered to surprise.
