Ugreen FineTrack 2 & Ugreen FineTrack Mini 2

For half the price and 5x longer battery life, the FineTrack 2 and FineTrack Mini 2 are fine (pun intended) alternatives to the AirTag.

What's Good?
  • Seamless Find My integration
  • Good but odd design choices?
  • Loud internal buzzers
  • Ludicrous 7-year battery life
What's Not?
  • Non-replaceable battery

Ugreen recently sent us two of their latest trackers, the FineTrack 2 and the aptly named FineTrack 2 Mini. As someone who has lost a bag in France recently, trackers are something that I have spent more than my fair share of time researching. So, my research has yielded that if you are tracking small items like your wallet, there’s nothing like the Apple AirTags with their Ultra Wideband (UWB) support. End of story.

But if the items you are tracking are larger, say like a luggage bag, and all you need is a quick notification in case it has left your proximity, voluntarily or involuntarily, or you just need it to beep to help you locate it, that’s when you will start looking into these more affordable trackers. And while more affordable, Ugreen has made sure to make the FineTrack 2 and FineTrack Mini 2 offer features to set it apart from the competition.

Seamless Find My integration

Works straightaway with Apple Find My.

Setting these up is as straightforward as it gets. Because they are certified for Apple’s Find My network, you don’t need to download any sketchy third-party apps or create separate accounts. You just open the native Find My app on your iPhone, tap to add an item, and the trackers pair within seconds. They tap into the massive global network of Apple devices to update their locations, meaning you get the exact same tracking coverage as you would with a first-party AirTag.

Good but odd design choices?

Ugreen FineTrack 2 FineTrack Mini 2 Review-3
Barely larger than an Apple AirTag, and it comes with a free sleeve!

The FineTrack Mini 2’s design is just as what you would expect from a tracker: small, inconspicuous. It is ever so slightly bulkier than an AirTag, but you can still easily slide it into a hidden pocket in your bag and forget about it. Unlike an AirTag, however, Ugreen has included a nice silicon sleeve that lets you turn it into a keychain. On that note, there are a few reflective dots added to make it easier to find in a dark room, but honestly, I think trackers don’t have to be easily spotted?

I am not sure why you need such a large tracker.

Well, if you want to be able to easily find your tracker, then you should instead get the FineTrack 2. Shaped like a football — the global kind, not American — it’s rather large and comes with a keyhole loop. It’s probably a matter of personal preference, but as I mentioned, I prefer my trackers out of sight, rather than glaringly obvious to an enterprising thief who would then just toss it away. With all that said, it does feel rather solid, with a soft touch finish across the entire ball aside from the three segments that house the reflective strips and LED window.

Loud internal buzzers

Ugreen FineTrack 2 FineTrack Mini 2 Review-1
Really loud buzzers make the FineTrack 2 very easy to locate.

These new FineTrack 2 and FineTrack Mini 2 feature significantly louder speakers than my Ugeen Smart Tag (CM520) and the Apple AirTag 1. Based on our (un)professional testing with an ROG Phone 7 Ultimate to measure, we collected the following data:

 Max Buzzer Loudness (dB)
Apple AirTag 160
Ugreen Smart Tag61
Ugreen FineTrack 284
Ugreen FineTrack Mini 273

It’s also worth noting that the pitch of the noise that these trackers make vary, and it seems that the FineTrack 2 has the most “whole” sound, while the rest rely on piercing loud beeps. All of them are quite easy to locate even when hidden under other stuff, but of course, its significantly easier when it’s louder. It’s worth noting that Ugreen claims 110dB loudness, but Android devices usually limit the microphone to pick up around 90dB max.

Ludicrous 7-year battery life

Ugreen FineTrack 2 FineTrack Mini 2 Review-6
The FineTrack Mini 2 is slightly larger than the older Ugreen Smart Tag and Apple AirTag, but offer at least 5x longer battery life.

Now, the most exciting part. The biggest differentiator of these these little finders from Ugreen is their immense battery life. Thanks to an ultra-low-power chip and a massive 600mAh internal cell, Ugreen claims these trackers can last anywhere from 5 to 7 years on a single charge. For context, standard trackers usually give up the ghost after 12 months. This means you can drop one into a piece of luggage or a camera bag and completely forget about it for the better part of a decade.

5~7 years of battery life essentially means that you don’t have to ever care about maintenance. Not like you can, anyway.

Now this really makes a huge difference as I have already changed the batteries in my Ugreen Smart Tags twice. I only noticed that they ran out of battery because they have already stopped updating the location for about three months. Now, imagine if it happened to an important item, and you only found out that you can’t track the location when it’s too late. While I am unable to test the actual battery life (maybe I will update this article after 5 years?) but longer is always better. Especially when it comes to battery life.

Ugreen FineTrack 2 & FineTrack Mini 2 — what’s not?

Non-replaceable battery

Ugreen FineTrack 2 FineTrack Mini 2 Review-6
Ugreen adopted a conventional CR2032 cell in the older design, before going for integrated, non-replaceable CR2045 cells.

While a 7-year lifespan sounds phenomenal, the glaring catch is that the internal battery is completely non-replaceable and non-rechargeable. Ugreen opted for a completely sealed, seamless chassis to hit a rugged IP68 waterproof rating and prevent child-safety issues like swallowed coin cells. However, it does mean that once those 7 years are up, the entire tracker becomes permanent electronic waste. It is still a very long lifecycle for a budget tracker, but a bit a shame that you can’t just slide a new cell in.

Ugreen FineTrack 2 & FineTrack Mini 2 — should you get this?

Ugreen FineTrack 2 FineTrack Mini 2 Review-10
Which design will you choose?

If you want a painless way to keep tabs on your backpack, keys, or wallet without paying the Apple tax, the FineTrack 2 and FineTrack Mini 2 are absolute no-brainers. The built-in keyholes (or included sleeve) save you money on accessories, and the half-decade-long battery life means that it’s truly a set-and-forget affair. Of course, the non-replaceable battery means that you will have to toss it away after that, but hey, most of us aren’t disposing button cell batteries properly anyway.

Ugreen FineTrack 2 FineTrack Mini 2 Review-8
For half the price and 5x longer battery life, the FineTrack 2 and FineTrack Mini 2 are fine (pun intended) alternatives to the AirTag.

With both available for less than RM55, or approximately half the price of an AirTag, I think it’s a fair choice to track items that you might not need to pinpoint the precise location of. I have used the Ugreen Smart Tag in my cars, and I think I will swap them out for the FineTrack Mini 2. I personally prefer the FineTrack Mini 2, considering that you get the same feature set in a more compact unit, but I guess the FineTrack 2 will have its fans. It’s the football season, after all.
