There is a stigma about gaming phones not having good imaging capabilities, but when it comes to gaming phones, one can’t get any more gaming-oriented than the ROG Phone series. We initially conducted a fairly straightforward review of the ROG Phone 7, but the more time we spent with it, the more we felt differently about this gaming phone. It’s like the Red Hydrogen One done right.

Yes, in our eyes, the ROG Phone 7 has not only excelled as a gaming phone but also seems to lay out a perfect foundation for a cine smartphone. I wouldn’t be surprised if ASUS develops a ProArt Phone in the coming days, a phone that would challenge the current leaders in mobile imaging.

8k + Stabilization / 4K + HDR+

The SoC (System-on-Chip) and image sensor configurations on the ROG Phone 7 and other models in the 7 series are among the best that the industry can offer. The Snapdragon 8 series Gen 2 is capable of recording videos in both 4K and the behemoth resolution of 8K. Additionally, the 4K videos can even be recorded in HDR mode, providing an extended color dynamic range starting from 10-bit, which boosts a high amount of color information for the footage.

We tested our ROG 7 with Pro-take, a professional video recording app, using the C-Log picture profile on 4k 24fps resolutions. Here are our results:

Existing module system

Remember when the Red Hydrogen One came out? It was betting on its unique module system. By utilizing a new ecosystem developed by Red themselves, the Red Hydrogen One aimed to become the centerpiece of a new generation of mobile cinematography systems. However, it all came crashing down like Hindenburg.

This is where the ROG Phone system comes in to solve the problem. The ROG Phone series has persistently worked to improve its modular technology, starting from a straightforward fan cooler to a more complex game controller. Even today, the ROG Phone 7 series maintains a modular system that is technologically matured and comprehensive.

Utilizing the same module system allows for the development of customized accessories specifically designed for cinematography. Things like an existing fan that can be tuned to run at low speeds to keep the phone cool while minimizing noise, an external storage expansion for direct recording, and even an external power pack are all potential features that can be included in the modular system. Additionally, an external omnidirectional microphone could also be incorporated.

Consistent phone platform

Before the fall of the mobile giant Motorola, they developed a unique module system called the Moto Z modular system. The Moto Z system achieved considerable success, offering a range of accessories from power banks to highly professional cameras. However, despite gaining some traction, it soon fizzled out. To some extent, the reason for its failure can be attributed to the merger between Lenovo and Motorola, and the subsequent swift changes in market segmentation and strategies after the merger.

On the other hand, the same cannot be said for the platform developed by Asus. Now in its 7th generation, the ROG Phone has not only reinvented the gaming phone genre, but also dominated it until now. The ROG Phone 5, 6, and 7 share a similar body build, allowing them to use the same phone case, accessories, and modules.

Simple USB Type C for external components

This bold move has never been done before, but it ultimately shares a similar concept to cars where different generations share a common platform but improve upon their components. Apart from expediting research and development, this should instill major confidence among users in the consistency of the phone platform and modular systems.

Advance cooling system

Nothing is more iconic than the AEROACTIVE Cooler systems

Image sensor cooling is crucial in today’s cameras, yet it remains a challenge for certain manufacturers to achieve efficient cooling. However, ROG has already taken steps to address this issue by incorporating an effective cooling mechanism in their phones. With further refinement and optimization, the ROG cooling system has the potential to cool not only the SoC but also the image sensor itself. This would represent a significant advancement for ROG in their quest to create a dedicated cinematography phone.
