The event, themed “Thrive with Green ICT,” brought together notable representatives from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), MTN Group, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Kenya’s ICT Authority, and Indonesia’s Bandung Institute of Technology. Their focus was on exploring the potential of digital technology to foster green development and contribute to a sustainable and inclusive digital world.

Digital Technology as a Catalyst for Global Sustainable Development

In his keynote speech, Jeffrey Zhou, President of ICT Marketing at Huawei, emphasized the pivotal role of digital technology as a key driver for global sustainable development. He reiterated Huawei’s commitment to ongoing technological innovation in collaboration with global partners, aiming to enhance digital inclusion, nurture thriving digital talent ecosystems, and contribute to building an inclusive and sustainable digital world.

ITU’s Green Digital Action (GDA) Initiative

Bilel Jamoussi, Deputy Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, introduced the Green Digital Action (GDA) initiative. He highlighted the significance of international standards in ensuring widespread network adoption and sustainable development. The GDA, a collaborative effort involving over 40 partners, including Huawei, focuses on accelerating industry-wide commitments to address climate challenges and prioritizing digital solutions in climate action.

Huawei’s TECH4ALL Initiative: A Five-Year Impact

Reflecting on Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative launched at MWC Barcelona 2019, the company showcased its five-year impact. TECH4ALL is a comprehensive digital inclusion initiative and action plan that has contributed to positive transformations in remote areas, among the underprivileged, and in environmental protection endeavors. The initiative aligns with Huawei’s commitment to using digital technology for social good.

Exploring Technological Advances for Conservation and Education

During the summit, Ms. Susanne Pedersen from IUCN discussed the potential of technological advances, including remote sensing, AI, machine learning, and E-DNA, in supporting conservation efforts. Dr. Miao Fengchun, Chief of UNESCO’s Unit for Technology and AI in Education, updated the audience on the progress of the Technology-enabled Open Schools for All project. The project aims to govern digital education with a focus on human-centered principles.

Skills Development and Private Sector Engagement

Friedrich Huebler and Soledad Patiño from UNESCO emphasized the critical role of skills development in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 and 8. They highlighted how digital technology can empower individuals and communities by improving skill acquisition. Private sector engagement was identified as a key factor in shaping a more equitable and brighter future for all.

Huawei ICT Academy Recognition

The summit also saw six European universities and colleges receiving the Huawei ICT Academy plaque. Institutions such as the DTI Academy, Yalova University, Learneo-academie, Fondazione Cultura&Innovazione, Politecnico di Bari, and University of Alicante pledged to collaborate with Huawei to foster digital talent cultivation in Europe.
