Xiaomi Malaysia has launched the Redmi 17 series, two budget phones that punch above their price point. Both the Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 4G share a 7,500mAh battery — a capacity usually reserved for rugged or gaming phones — and a 6.9-inch 120Hz display. The standout for many will be the new Dynamic RGB light built into the rear camera module, the first time this notification trick has appeared on a Redmi device.

Despite costing under RM1,000, neither phone feels stripped down. You get a 50MP main camera, 45W wired fast charging, IP64 dust and splash resistance, Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, NFC, dual-band WiFi and Xiaomi HyperOS 3. The main difference is connectivity and the chipset.

Pricing and Where to Buy

The Redmi 17 series is on sale now in Malaysia via official Xiaomi stores on Lazada and Shopee. Launch promo pricing:

Redmi 17 5G: Sub-RM1K With 5G and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5

The Redmi 17 5G runs on Qualcomm’s 4nm Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chipset with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. The display pushes 1600×720 resolution with up to 120Hz refresh and 825 nits peak brightness in High Brightness Mode. Photography is handled by a 50MP f/1.8 main camera plus an auxiliary lens, with an 8MP f/2.05 selfie shooter up front.

The 7,500mAh battery supports 45W wired charging over USB-C — rare for this tier. The Dynamic RGB light adds personality with custom effects for notifications and calls, usually a Redmi Note and above feature. The phone ships with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, AI face unlock and NFC for contactless payments.

Redmi 17 4G: Cheaper Alternative With the Same Big Battery

If you don’t need 5G, the Redmi 17 4G gives up only a handful of features to hit its lower price. It runs on a 12nm MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra chipset with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of eMMC 5.1 storage. Storage is slower than the 5G variant’s UFS 2.2, and there’s no 5G modem, but the rest of the package is identical.

The 6.9-inch 120Hz display, 50MP main camera, 8MP front shooter, 7,500mAh battery, 45W charging, IP64 rating, Gorilla Glass 7i, Dynamic RGB light and HyperOS 3 all carry over. For users who mostly stream, chat and use their phone as a hotspot, the 4G model is a sensible pick — and at RM669 promo, it’s one of the cheapest ways to get a 7,500mAh battery in Malaysia right now.

REDMI A7

Alongside the REDMI 17 Series, Xiaomi also introduced the REDMI A7, an entry-range smartphone with reliable everyday performance with entry price point. It features an immersive 6.88-inch 120Hz displays, a 5200mAh battery, and Unisoc T7250 octa-core processor. Equipped with a 13MP AI camera system, Wet Touch Technology, and stylish colour options, the REDMI A7 delivers a well-rounded smartphone experience that combines practicality, durability, and value for everyday use.

Our Take

The Redmi 17 series is Xiaomi flooding the budget segment with strong specs at low prices — but this time the battery anchors the pitch. A 7,500mAh cell at RM669 is genuinely hard to beat, especially with 45W charging and IP64 in the box. Phones at this price usually compromise on charging speed, water resistance or both.

The Dynamic RGB light is a fun touch that won’t matter to everyone, but it signals where Xiaomi sees the budget market going: more personality, more features borrowed from mid-rangers. The 720p display is the obvious compromise, worth flagging for heavy video watchers. For messaging, social media, light gaming or as a backup or first smartphone, the Redmi 17 series is well-positioned.

Our pick is the Redmi 17 5G at RM769 promo if you want the better chipset and faster storage. If 5G isn’t critical, the RM669 Redmi 17 4G is the smarter buy — same battery, same camera, same display, just a slower chip and modem. Either way, the launch promo makes now a good time to grab one before prices snap back in September.
