Sonos 27 — A More Open, Intelligent Audio OS
Sonos has officially taken the wraps off Sonos 27, the next major iteration of its audio operating system, and the headline is that the platform is becoming more open and more conversational. The new OS introduces AI control through multiple assistants and agents, including Sonos Voice — the brand’s own assistant built for music and mood curation — and Sonos 27 MCP, which connects listeners to AI assistants of their choice.
That ChatGPT integration is the headline feature for most users. Product lead for ChatGPT Voice at OpenAI, Atty Eleti, said the integration lets people ask ChatGPT to play music anywhere in the home from a phone or computer without leaving the conversation they are having. It is a small UX win that fits neatly into how people actually use their phones now. Sonos is also previewing Sonos Custom Agents, which will let users build their own agents with custom models, personas, and voices — a more advanced feature for power users and tinkerers.
Beyond AI, Sonos 27 introduces Sonos Fabric, a system capability that lets Sonos products sense each other and adapt to the moment. The redesigned Sonos 27 app also brings cleaner navigation and more intuitive controls, which addresses one of the more consistent complaints about earlier versions of the platform.
Beam Ultra Brings 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos Home
The new Beam Ultra soundbar keeps Beam’s compact mid-size form factor while finally delivering true 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos. Sonos has built it around nine custom drivers, including two dedicated up-firing drivers, for a more immersive home theatre experience and warmer bass. The redesigned centre channel is tuned for clearer dialogue, which addresses one of the more common pain points with mid-size soundbars — losing the vocal mix to ambient sound effects.
Four levels of AI Speech Enhancement give users granular control over dialogue clarity, and Night Sound is supported for late-night listening without waking the rest of the household. Beam Ultra can also be expanded with a Sub or rear surrounds, including compatible Sonos portable speakers, so listeners can build their home theatre system over time rather than buying everything up front. Trueplay tunes the bar to the room it’s in.
Connectivity covers WiFi, Bluetooth, and HDMI eARC, which gives the bar broader compatibility with modern TVs and gaming consoles. The end result is a soundbar that feels meaningfully more capable than its predecessor without forcing buyers into a complete system overhaul.
Sonos Ace Ultra — Headphones That Join the System
The Sonos Ace Ultra is the brand’s newest premium over-ear headphone and the first to be built on Headphone Engine 2, a new hardware platform that lets the headphones connect directly to the Sonos system through headphone linking. With one press, listeners can move whatever is playing on their Sonos system to their headphones, or pull it back to the speakers, without needing a phone in range.
Under the hood, Sonos has equipped the Ace Ultra with a Sonos-designed 40mm driver, Adaptive ANC powered by ten microphones, and up to 35 hours of battery life with ANC on. The Adaptive ANC is a clear step up from the original Ace, which relied on a more conventional noise-cancelling array. Connectivity covers USB-C and 3.5mm, which gives users wired options for high-resolution sources or in-flight entertainment.
TrueCinema tunes the Ace Ultra to the room when sound is pulled from a compatible soundbar, which is a more refined experience than the original Ace’s TV Swap. The end result is a pair of headphones that genuinely feel like part of the wider Sonos ecosystem rather than a separate accessory.
Pricing and Availability in Malaysia
Sonos 27’s new app navigation and Portable Surrounds will begin rolling out from 8 September 2026, alongside Sonos 27 MCP in Early Access. TC Acoustic, the official distributor of Sonos in Malaysia, will start pre-orders for the Beam Ultra and Sonos Ace Ultra on 2 September 2026 via tcacoustic.asia and the Sonos Concept Store @ The Starhill in Kuala Lumpur.
Beam Ultra is priced at RM4,199 and will be available in Black and White. Sonos Ace Ultra is priced at RM2,299 and will be available in four colourways — Black, White, Agave, and Sand. Sonos has also unveiled a new Sand colourway for the Sonos Play portable wireless speaker, priced at RM1,899, also available for pre-order from 2 September. From 15 September 2026 onwards, Beam Ultra and selected colours of Sonos Ace Ultra will also be available for pre-order on Lazada Malaysia. All new products go on general sale from 29 September 2026.
Our Take
The Sonos 27 launch is less about flashy new hardware and more about the platform finally catching up to the way people use audio in 2026. ChatGPT integration as a native voice control is the kind of feature that sounds gimmicky until you try it — and once you do, going back to “play jazz in the kitchen” feels stilted. Sonos Fabric and the headphone linking on the Ace Ultra also point to the right strategic direction: making the system more useful as a whole rather than pushing more individual speakers.
On pricing, the Beam Ultra at RM4,199 is a step up from the existing Beam Gen 2, but the upgrade — true 7.1.2 Atmos from a mid-size bar with AI Speech Enhancement — is substantial enough to justify it for anyone already invested in the Sonos ecosystem. The Ace Ultra at RM2,299 lands in premium headphone territory alongside the Sony WH-1000XM6 and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra, but the system integration is the differentiator. For Malaysian listeners already running Sonos at home, the Ace Ultra is the easiest pair of headphones to recommend. For everyone else, the Beam Ultra is the entry point worth waiting for.
