Acer Doubles Down on Gaming Handhelds at IFA Berlin

Acer used its IFA GPC press conference to push deeper into the gaming handheld market it helped popularise with the Predator Nitro lines. The new Predator Atlas 7 takes direct aim at the premium tier where Lenovo’s Legion Go, ASUS’s ROG Ally X, and Valve’s Steam Deck OLED currently compete. Acer’s pitch is uncompromising: more silicon, more battery, more cooling surface, and fewer compromises around input quality.

The bigger story is Project DualPlay Mini, a concept that openly admits the handheld form factor has limits. Acer’s choice of Intel Arc B390 graphics is a calculated risk — driver maturity on x86 handhelds has been rough for years — but pairing it with an 80 Wh battery and Xbox Game Pass bundled in changes the value proposition considerably. The TMR joystick option is a quietly important detail: tunneling magnetoresistance sensors don’t drift the way Hall-effect sticks can over time, and PC gamers have been begging for non-drifting sticks since the Steam Deck launched.

Project DualPlay Mini is the more interesting bet. Convertible handhelds have mostly failed because the keyboard compromises the grip, but Acer’s flip-and-swivel hinge at least attempts to solve the worst of that trade-off.
