Toshiba Z870M Review – Mini LED Gaming TV

We covered the impressive Toshiba Z670M TV late last year. That TV, for us, set a benchmark for how far televisions have come in adapting to new home entertainment systems.

The Toshiba Z870M is a high-end television designed for gamers and entertainment enthusiasts. It boasts a number of impressive features, including a large screen size, high refresh rate, and a powerful sound system.

Since both models share many similarities, this review highlights three outstanding features of the Toshiba Z870M: picture quality, sound quality, and gamer support features.

Picture Quality

The Z870M features a large Mini LED display with a 144Hz refresh rate. The model we reviewed is a 65-incher, similar to the Z670M model we looked at. When placed side-by-side, it’s evident that the Z870M offers superior image quality.

All the image quality improvements come from the 4K Mini LED panels. With LEDs 1/100th the size of conventional LEDs, they bring extraordinary contrast and brightness, with highly precise local dimming. This results in more true-to-life contrast with true whites and true blacks, leading to more realistic images.

Paired with the Mini LED panel, Toshiba still includes the vibrant Quantum Dot technology. Similar to the Z670M, the Z870M offers enhanced color reproduction. Compared to common panels, Quantum Dots emit a stronger blue light. This, balanced with stronger color recreation, creates lifelike visuals.

Like the Toshiba Z870M, it also comes with a 144Hz refresh rate. This high refresh rate ensures smooth, blur-free motion, even in fast-paced games. The television also supports Dolby Vision and HDR, which provide a wider range of colors and brighter whites for a more realistic viewing experience.

Sound Quality

Equipped with REGZA Power Audio Pro+, this is a 77W 2.1.2 audio setup built into the TV, offering a premium audio experience without the need for an external sound system.

What makes this interesting is that the Toshiba Z870M is powered by the REGZA Engine ZRi, which, as highlighted in our dedicated article, is an AI TV processor. The processor is capable of perceiving the surrounding environment it’s in and tuning its audio profile accordingly. This was evident during my testing session in the showroom; even in a room with a lot of reflective panels, the audio from the TV was precisely focused towards me.

Gamer Genetic

Being in the same lineage as the Z670M, the Z870M offers the same set of advanced gaming features. With a 144Hz refresh rate, Game Mode Pro, a gaming-dedicated HUD, VRR mode, and ALLM, it’s safe to say that gaming on this TV is highly enjoyable.

While we didn’t bring a console to full exploit all these features, but we did bring an ROG Ally to experience the TV. We have to say the experience is highly enjoyable.
