Introduction

The Oppo Reno 8Z 5G is the younger brother of Oppo’s Reno 8 series. While being the most affordable Reno 8, it none the less packs some great features below it. Let’s find out what does the Oppo Reno 8Z 5G have in it bag.

Oppo Reno 8Z 5G’s exterior

The Oppo Reno 8Z 5G have an eye catching design, with the sample on hand used a color call “Dawnlight Gold”, it glows orange light originally, but fade to blue under light as show case in our image below.

The surface finishing being matte, this phone distinguishes it self from the rest by not being a finger print magnet. Its slim, minimum camera protrusion, paired with the metal bracket around the phone gave it an unique elegent looks. Perfect for classy people with the extra desire for looks.

There’s 3 button in total on the phone, the volume rocker and power/lock button.

Below the phone you can find the speakers holes, the USB-C port, and 3.5mm audio jack. While normally I’ll be quite happy with present of audio jack, but in this situation I find it dismissing the originally elegant looks and can’t help but thinking would forgoing the audio jack would make the phone even slimmer and lighter.

Orbit light

Yes, one of the reason we specifically seek for this model is the Orbit light, 2 ring lights around the cameras. It is one of the features we find very fascinating as it glow to display notification.

User can customize the orbit light setting at the Breathing light segment at setting, customizing to glow when charge, call, or when certain app or game is running.

I like the fact that the Oppo Reno 8Z 5G does not tried to fool us with a mediocre macro camera. Usually the macro camera on phone perform badly, by using the main camera with 4cm close focus, it function well in capturing astonishing details.

The Oppo Reno 8Z 5G is powered by a mid range CPU which is the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 695 . Is has 8 cores with speed up to 2.2GHz with is relatively fast .It is paired with the Adreno™ 619 with speed up to 840MHz. This SOC offering good performance for daily use. The same chipset is also by the recent Sony Xperia 10 IV, a mid range smartphone offer by Sony.

In terms of ram, the Oppo Reno 8Z 5G carries 8GB LPDD4X ram with a generous 256GB worth of storage. This setup ensure smooth operation and plenty of storage for apps and pictures. Other smartphone at similar point point usually offer either less ram or storage, so the Oppo Reno 8Z 5G offer rather good value in the department.

Let’s not get bind down by benchmark but let the user experience speak for it self. Over the course of 1 month using this phone, we can safely says that the phone is very smooth to be operate with. Moving in the UI show no sign of sluggishness nor any form of delay. Booting apps is fast and snappy.

Oppo Reno 8Z 5G Display

The 6.43 inch FHD+ AMOLED is very vibrate to admire on. Although without HDR support, it is certify by Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos HD video certification. Which means the Reno 8Z 5G stream HD video from these platform without issues. The display is also SGS certified, proven to admit less than 12.5% of harmful blue light, offering greater eye comfort and making perfect in binging video on your bed.

Watching movie with the Oppo Reno 8Z 5G is very enjoyable, while is not HDR, it is still 93% DCI-P3 on vivid mode, that pretty good for a device at this range. On Gentle mode the phone are displaying sRGB likely 100% while not stated, with such high DCI-P3 coverage it would be covering the full range of SRGB. That aside binging shows on this is an enjoyment.

While being an eye candy, the biggest beef i have with the Oppo Reno 8Z 5G is that it only support 60Hz refresh rate. Other phone with similar price point usually would offer higher refresh rate, this could be because the Oppo Reno 8Z 5G focused more of common user, hence they went for just 60Hz refresh rate.

The display used SCHOTT Xensation Up glass, chemical strengthened lithium aluminosilicate (LAS) cover glass that is similar like Gorilla glass. For those that is not familiar with Schott, other smartphone provider like Vivo and Xiaomi also used their product in their phone line up.

So can you game on the Oppo Reno 8Z 5G? Yes. Most game performed well despite the the mid range chipset. But all and all so long that you’re welling to turn down the resolution, you would still have an enjoyable gaming experience with the phone.
