Tech Reviewer Level1Techs has received a custom made B650 LiveMixer from Asrock. It was shipped with an unannounced “X670 Xpansion kit” expansion card that would essentially upgrade the board to an X670 board!

How? Wendell from Level1Techs explained that the expansion card, essentially carries an AMD chipset, likely B650. By connecting the expansion card, you can basically daisy chain another chipset to the existing board. The structure is similar to that of the X670 board, in which an additional AMD chipset is daisy chained to expand its I/O ports.

This expansion card includes the following ports:

  • 2 X 4 M.2 NVME ports
  • 1 X 10Gbps Ethernet
  • 1 X 3 Type A
  • 1 X Type C / Thunderbolt?
  • 1 X 2 SATA

There is no news on when the expansion card will be made available to the public and it will not work with just any other board since it requires an additional J1 header to be connected to function.

The question I’m asking is would other manufacturer be able to make similar cards? It would make a world of difference for B650 boards to be able to be upgraded to an X670 board if needed.
