The ASUS Vivobook S 15 (S5507) is a sleek and powerful laptop that offers a lot to like. Its 3K 120 Hz OLED display is a standout feature, delivering vibrant colors and smooth visuals. The full-aluminum chassis that weighs just 1.42kg slips easily into any bag. But among all of its features, the limelight is definitely on the Snapdragon X Elite processor, bringing Windows on Arm to the mainstream. Having checked out the AMD-powered and Intel-powered ASUS Vivobook S, let’s see if this Snapdragon-powered ASUS Vivobook S 15 is the Vivobook S for you.
ASUS Vivobook S 15 — What’s Good?
Great when it’s good
While the Snapdragon X Elite processor may not be as well-known as Intel or AMD chips, it packs a serious punch. This energy-efficient processor offers ample power for most of your computing tasks. It shares the same 45W TDP as most modern x86 processors, giving it similar performance in heavier workloads like video editing, but where it really shines is in less demanding stuff like when you’re watching videos or browsing the web. And given the workloads we see daily, that’s what most of us do on our laptops.
Battery life figures of around 10 hours on a single can realistically be achieved on the ASUS Vivobook S 15 (S5507), something which you will rarely, if ever, see on a regular x86 Windows laptop. As mentioned above, this really depends on your workload. But in my usual web browsing mixed with some light productivity, I hit these numbers quite consistently. Another perk of the Snapdragon X Elite is its AI prowess. While Microsoft may have tapped the brakes on their AI bull rush by recalling Recall (pun fully intended), the ASUS Vivobook S 15 is a Copilot+ PC, meaning that it’s ready for the on-device AI features Windows has up its sleeve right now, like Live Captions and Cocreator.
Can handle (some) games
While the ASUS Vivobook S 15 isn’t a dedicated gaming laptop, it can handle casual gaming quite well. Of course, as it’s Arm-based, you might encounter a few issues here and there. Not every game will run well, simply because you might run into translation issues getting the x86 code to run on the Snapdragon X Elite processor. But when it runs, it runs really well, as the Adreno graphics here is really quite beefy. This isn’t even the full-fat Snapdragon X Elite chip, so the future is really looking quite bright for Snapdragon-based gaming handhelds. After Microsoft and Qualcomm refine the Prism translation layer, that is.

A few quirks
As mentioned above, while the ASUS Vivobook S 15 (S5507) has a lot to offer with its Snapdragon X Elite chipset, it’s not without its flaws. As a new platform, it may not be as well-optimized as Intel or AMD chips, leading to slightly lower performance in certain usage scenarios. Or some apps and games that aren’t built for Arm may just outright refuse to run.
On the bright side, this situation is sure to improve, as Microsoft seems to be working really hard to improve the Windows on Arm experience. Not unexpected, to be honest, given how successful Apple has been with their Arm-based M-series. We’re probably exaggerating here, but Apple has single-handedly redefined the mobile computing experience with unprecedented efficiency, and Microsoft and Qualcomm would be fools to not try and offer an appropriate answer.

ASUS Vivobook S 15 — should you buy this?
The Asus Vivobook S 15 (S5507) is a fantastic laptop. Its stunning display, efficient performance, and sleek design make it a great choice for anyone who can appreciate the excellent battery life, and can live with some issues here and there as Windows on Arm finds its legs. It may not be the perfect laptop for everyone, and for RM6,299, it does seem a bit pricey for what might seem like a beta device to many. If you trust Microsoft to make Windows on Arm just as capable as the Windows you’re used to running on x86 processors, but with better battery life, this is a very promising option. If not… ASUS also offers a wide assortment of ASUS Vivobook S, powered by your good ol’ x86 chips from AMD and Intel.
