Hong Kong is pitching itself as the autumn-and-year-end destination of choice for Malaysian travellers, with the Hong Kong Tourism Board rolling out a packed calendar of events that runs from mid-September all the way to the New Year’s Eve fireworks over Victoria Harbour.
The pitch is “Only in Hong Kong” experiences across culture, food, adventure and family fun — capitalising on the city’s positioning as the Events Capital of Asia. For Malaysians eyeing a regional getaway before year-end, the calendar is unusually dense.
Culture: Lanterns and Fire Dragons
Hong Kong’s autumn opens with the Mid-Autumn Festival at Victoria Park from 17 to 27 September, featuring a large-scale international lantern display that includes the famous Qinhuai Lanterns from Nanjing and an International Lantern Corridor showcasing festive artistry from more than 20 countries.
That runs straight into the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance from 24 to 26 September — the 147th edition of the tradition, where a 67-metre dragon lit by 12,000 burning incense sticks winds through the streets of Tai Hang in Causeway Bay.
Adventure: Cyclothon and the Outdoors
For active travellers, the Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon takes over the city on 11 October, with scenic 56km and 32km routes crossing bridges and tunnels, plus a Carnival in the West Kowloon Cultural District. The festival extends into November with the wider Hong Kong Wine & Dine Month.
Halloween: A First-Ever Citywide Celebration
October also brings Hong Kong’s first citywide Halloween celebration, with themed activities and local collaborations across multiple districts. Visitors can join special weekends on 17 and 24 October before the citywide finale on 31 October. Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park will layer in their signature Halloween experiences on top.
Year-End: WinterFest and NYE Fireworks
The celebrations roll into winter with Hong Kong WinterFest from November, featuring Christmas Town and light displays across Central, Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay, plus seasonal shopping and festive dining. The grand finale is the New Year Countdown Celebrations on 31 December, with fireworks lighting up Victoria Harbour.

The first-ever citywide Halloween is the wildcard: it gives Hong Kong a US-style Halloween moment without copying the US format, which could pull in younger Malaysian travellers who currently default to Singapore or Bangkok for short breaks.
For Malaysian visitors, the practicalities matter as much as the events. Direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong are frequent and short, the Malaysian ringgit goes further in HKD than it did a year ago, and the city is well-set-up for short stays.
