A Throwback With 20 Years of ROG Heritage

ASUS Republic of Gamers Malaysia has confirmed that the special-edition ROG Xbox Ally X20 will be available for pre-order in Malaysia soon, both as a standalone handheld and as the centrepiece of a 20th anniversary collector’s bundle. The news lands roughly 20 years after the formation of ROG in 2006, and the device is unmistakably designed to mark the occasion.

The X20 keeps the original Xbox Ally’s translucent-black plastic chassis, but with a fresh gold-accented internal structure that hints at the cooling system and AMD silicon underneath. It is, in ROG’s words, both “a throwback to gaming two decades ago and a vision of what’s next.”

Standalone: The Handheld and the AR Glasses

For gamers who want just the handheld, the ROG Xbox Ally X20 can be pre-ordered on its own. It debuts ROG’s new Nebula HDR Display — a 7.4-inch OLED panel rated at 600 nits typical and 1,400 nits peak, with a 120Hz refresh rate, FreeSync Premium Pro, VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 and Dolby Vision. Driving it is AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, paired with 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory and a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD that can be upgraded later. Power comes from an 80Wh battery, and weight lands at 756g.

Malaysian buyers will also be able to pick up the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses separately. They use Sony Micro-OLED panels running at 120Hz (or 240Hz with Frame Rate Boost on), deliver a 171-inch virtual screen at four metres, cover a 57° field of view, and pack BOSE-tuned audio plus 3DoF head tracking and Anchor Mode.

The Ultimate Bundle

The collector’s bundle pairs the X20 with a custom dbrand Killswitch case — kickstand, ruggedised grips, joystick covers, and a circuit-board-pattern skin derived from the device’s internals — plus a Pelican Protector Case with red ROG latches and the 20th anniversary badge. Rounding it out are a 68W charger and the matching ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR Glasses, which plug into the handheld via a single USB-C cable for what ROG calls “the ultimate mobile gaming battlestation.”

What’s Still Under Wraps

ASUS ROG Malaysia has not yet announced local pricing or the exact pre-order date for the standalone X20, the XREAL R1 AR Glasses, or the collector’s bundle. The company says “stay tuned” for the full local announcement.

Our Take

ROG is leaning hard into the nostalgia play here — the translucent chassis is a direct nod to late-90s/early-2000s gaming hardware aesthetics, and the 20th-anniversary framing makes the bundle feel like a collector’s item rather than just another handheld refresh. The real test will be price. The original Xbox Ally launched in Malaysia at the premium end of the handheld market, and the X20 with the AMD Z2 Extreme chip plus Nebula HDR OLED is unlikely to be cheaper. The bundle, if priced reasonably, could be the more compelling buy for ROG fans — the dbrand Killswitch + Pelican case + AR glasses stack is otherwise a RM2,000+ add-on haul on its own.

For Malaysian gamers who already own an Xbox Ally or Steam Deck OLED, the X20’s pitch is incremental rather than essential. For everyone else, the pre-order window will be the moment to find out whether 20 years of ROG heritage justifies the sticker.
