Xiaomi 14T Pro Camera Review

The Xiaomi T model has always been known for offering flagship-like performance at a more affordable price. When Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi 14 series, it captivated the world with its Leica 1-inch sensor and Summilux Optical lens. However, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s high price of RM5199 at launch made it inaccessible to many.

Now, with the introduction of the Xiaomi 14T series, we have the Xiaomi 14T Pro, which is co-engineered with Leica and features a Leica Summilux Optical Lens design and a Light Fusion 900 image sensor. These specifications are similar to the baseline Xiaomi 14 model. Priced at only RM 2,599.00, it is almost a thousand less expensive than the Xiaomi 14.

I am hopeful that the Xiaomi 14T is capable of producing masterful images similar to the full flagship units. In this review, we will explore its photography capabilities

Xiaomi 14T Pro Camera line up

Main Camera – Leica 23mm with Light Fusion Sensor

One thing we must touch on before we start is the main camera’s sensor, the Light Fusion 900. This sensor is exclusive to Xiaomi and was specifically designed to accommodate the Leica Summilux lens. The setup is similar to the Xiaomi 14, which is very likely the same.

So did Xiaomi just develop its own sensor? Yes and no. The sensor is manufactured by OmniVision, model OV50H40. This particular 1/1.3″ sensor is exclusively for Xiaomi phones, without being shared with other phone manufacturers.

Leica Summilux Lens

I cannot be certain that this is the same lens used on the Xiaomi 14, but the lens’ specifications seem very similar. If it is, this is a 7-element aspherical high-transmittance f/1.6 lens with optical image stabilization and an anti-glare lens coating. This lens has given the Xiaomi 14 amazing image results with great color reproduction and contrast.

The main camera’s sharpness and details are beyond my expectations. The zoom range of 23mm seems odd on paper, but it’s actually similar to a 35mm lens on a full-frame camera. The Light Fusion 900 has the best dynamic range among the three cameras and performs well in low-light shots, while retaining a lot of detail for later editing. This range allows users to include more story elements in a frame, telling a more intriguing story. However, this also makes framing shots more challenging, involving more movement to create the right frame.

Telephoto Camera – Leica 60mm

The Xiaomi 14T Pro’s telephoto camera is a powerful 50MP camera with a f/2 lens. It is one of the first phones to use the 50MP Samsung s5kkd1 sensor, which is a large 1/3.42″ sensor with a pixel size of 0.64μm.

This allows for exceptional detail and low-light performance. The sensor also features autofocus and HDR capabilities to ensure that every shot is captured with precision and clarity.

This is perhaps my favorite camera among the three. Closing in on shots without compromising quality, it still maintains plenty of details and retains the texture of surfaces. However, this camera does suffer from chromatic aberration, which is, however, easy to fix in post-processing.

Ultra-Wide Camera – Leica 15mm

The Xiaomi 14T Pro’s ultra-wide camera features the 12MP OmniVision OV13B10 sensor.

This 1/3.06″ sensor packs a 12-megapixel resolution and features phase detection autofocus. The 15mm lens also has a wide open f/2.2 aperture, allowing for reasonable low-light performance.

The wide 15mm angle is great for scenery shots. There’s still great color and information capture, however, the image can look flat sometimes and would need more post-processing.

The Leica Color Science

The camera comes with two exclusive color profiles: Leica Vibrant and Leica Authentic. Leica Vibrant, as the name suggests, creates a more vibrant color palette, while Leica Authentic offers a more true-to-life approach.

I noticed that the Leica Authentic color profile has a more natural tone of color and a subtle vignette. This combination gives it a genuine and lens-like appearance.

The Vibrant profile, as the name suggests, has a more vibrant color, particularly in the red and blue tones, with a colder temperature. This gives it the signature Summilux look of electrifying effects.

Xiaomi 14T Pro Conclusion

The Xiaomi 14T Pro offers a fantastic camera setup that delivers exceptional image quality. The main camera, with its Leica Summilux Optical Lens and Light Fusion 900 sensor, captures stunning photos with excellent detail, dynamic range, and low-light performance.

The telephoto camera is a versatile tool for capturing subjects from a distance without compromising quality. While it may suffer from chromatic aberration, this can be easily corrected in post-processing. The ultra-wide camera is great for capturing landscapes and group photos, but its 12-megapixel resolution can sometimes lead to flatter images that require more post-processing.

One of the standout features of the Xiaomi 14T Pro is its Leica-tuned color profiles. The Leica Vibrant and Leica Authentic profiles offer distinct color styles, allowing users to choose the one that best suits their preferences. The Leica Vibrant profile provides a more vibrant and colorful look, while Leica Authentic offers a more natural and true-to-life color tone.

Overall, the Xiaomi 14T Pro’s camera system is a strong contender in the mid-range smartphone market. It offers excellent image quality, versatility, and a customizable color profile. While it may not have the same level of performance as a flagship device, it provides a great value for the price.
