Asus ProArt PZ13 Tablet Review: Content Creator Tablet with Snapdragon

Overview

In a surprising move, Asus has unveiled the ProArt PZ13, a groundbreaking tablet designed for content creators. This innovative device boasts a powerful display capable of handling professional-grade content. However, the most intriguing aspect of the PZ13 is its choice of processor: a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus SOC. This marks a significant departure from traditional Intel-based Windows tablets and positions the PZ13 as a pioneer in the ARM-powered Windows ecosystem.

With the recent controversies surrounding Intel’s 14th generation processors, the rise of ARM-powered Windows devices is gaining momentum. The PZ13 could be a pivotal moment in this shift, offering users a new and potentially more efficient option for their computing needs.

In this review, we will delve into the PZ13’s strengths and weaknesses, with particular attention to its performance when running demanding content creation applications like Lightroom and Premiere Pro. Given its ARM-based architecture, we have tempered our expectations, recognizing the challenges that can arise when using such devices for intensive tasks.

What I like about the ProArt PZ13

Monstrous display for content creator

The ProArt PZ13 boasts a stunning 13.3-inch ASUS Lumina OLED NanoEdge display with a 3K (2880 x 1800) resolution but only with a basic 60Hz refresh rate. This exceptional panel offers a wide 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, producing high color accuracy cater for users, mainly for professionals.

While our standard monitor calibrator was incompatible due to the ARM-based processor, the display’s visuals were undeniably impressive, exhibiting a dynamic range that rivaled our dedicated ProArt monitor.

We put the PZ13 to the test with Adobe Lightroom and Premiere Pro, and were pleased to find that it delivered a similar level of dynamic range as our ProArt monitor. This bodes well for content creators seeking a portable device capable of handling demanding photo editing tasks.

For entertainment, the PZ13’s display supports VESA Display HDR™ 500 True Black. These standards boost higher standard of HDR display, and the ProArt PZ13 aim to provide high standard of visual experience for users.

Additionally, the TÜV Rheinland Eye Care certification guarantees reduced eye strain during extended viewing sessions.  The touchscreen functionality, keyboard folio case, and a high precision stylus also make the tablet highly suitable for professional productivity and creative workflows.

Build to handle the Elements Outdoor

The ProArt PZ13 is designed to withstand the rigors of outdoor environments. On portability, the slim 9mm profile and a lightweight 0.85kg construction, it’s easy to carry on the go. On durability, the tablet features a durable metal base casing and a magnetic cover stand that doubles as a protective case. And for the finishing touch, the protective cover’s surface is adorned with a hard plastic material featuring a fabric-sprinkled with textured finish, reminiscent of military-grade materials.

The tablet is certified with IP52 and US MIL-STD-810H certifications. This meant the PZ13 is resistant to dust and water splashes, making it ideal for outdoor activities. We envision this tablet being a valuable tool for travel content creators who venture into remote locations, capturing stunning images and videos. The PZ13’s rugged design and portability make it a perfect companion for editing and uploading content on the go.

Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus, Trading punches with the big boys

The Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus SOC, which powers the ProArt PZ13, has surprised us with its impressive performance.

On the CPU front, the PZ13 achieved a Cinebench 2024 multi-core score of 487 and a single-core score of 11. These scores are closely behind Apple’s M1 series processor.

In terms of GPU performance, the PZ13 scored 3230 in 3D Mark’s Wild Life Extreme benchmark. This puts it in the same ballpark as Intel Arc Graphics and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650M GPUs.

Perhaps the best IO option available

The ProArt PZ13 offers a comprehensive set of I/O options, making it a versatile device for various connectivity needs. The tablet features two USB 4 Type-C ports that support data transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps and 100W power delivery. These ports provide ample flexibility for connecting modern peripherals and charging the tablet.

For users who require full-sized USB ports, the PZ13 can be easily expanded with a USB hub. Additionally, the tablet includes an SD card reader that supports SD 7.0, UHS-II, and transfer speeds of up to 985 Mbps. To accommodate micro SD cards, Asus thoughtfully includes a micro SD card adapter in the box.

Possibility of being more than just being an editing tool

The ProArt PZ13’s powerful Snapdragon X Plus SOC and dual USB 4 Type-C ports open up a world of possibilities beyond traditional content creation tasks.

A Versatile Wireless Monitor:

When paired with a wireless HDMI transmitter and receiver, the PZ13 can transform into a powerful wireless monitor for production crews, offering flexibility and convenience on set.

A Cinematic Experience:

The tablet’s HDR 500 True Black display, combined with Dolby Atmos audio and Asus Smart Amplifier technology, delivers a cinematic experience that rivals dedicated monitors.

A Content Creator’s Hub:

The 5MP front camera, WiFi 7 connectivity, and 3DNR technology make the PZ13 an ideal device for content creators who need to participate in virtual meetings or collaborate with remote teams.

Ridiculously long battery life

Given the ProArt PZ13’s focus on portability and extended usage, battery life is a crucial factor. The tablet’s 70 Wh battery squeeze an impressive 16 hours and 38 minutes of FHD video playback. This results indicate that users can comfortably use the PZ13 on the go without worrying about battery anxiety, even when editing multiple short videos.

The PZ13’s convenient USB-C charging port supports 100W PD charging, allowing for quick and efficient recharging. While Asus includes a charging adapter, the tablet is compatible with any third-party charger that supports USB-C PD, providing users with flexibility and convenience.

What I Don’t like about the ProArt PZ13

No simcard support for LTE or 5G support

The PZ13 currently does not support LTE or 5G connectivity. While this may not be a significant issue for those primarily working in controlled environments, it could be a limitation for content creators going into rural area and who need internet access on-demand.

This is in line with it rigid portable design that encourage users to adventure into the less travel path, it would be great if the tablet can keep some form of connection available.

Compatibility Concerns:

As an ARM-based device running Windows, the PZ13 may face compatibility issues with certain software and peripherals. For example, we were unable to install the driver for our Datacolor Spyder 5 Express color calibrator.

It’s likely that older devices or specialized software may encounter similar problems. While backward compatibility is important, technological advancements often necessitate some trade-offs.

ProArt PZ13 Conclusion: Ragid Creative, Reimagined

The Asus ProArt PZ13 is a groundbreaking tablet that offers a compelling combination of performance, portability, and durability. Its powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus SOC, stunning OLED display, and rugged construction make it an ideal choice for content creators who demand a versatile and reliable device.

While the lack of cellular connectivity and potential compatibility issues with certain software and peripherals may be minor drawbacks, the PZ13’s overall strengths far outweigh these limitations. The tablet’s long battery life, extensive I/O options, and wide possibility of application versatile tool for creative workflows. Just as an extra note, the tablet can handle Adobe Lightroom and Premiere fluidly with little to no stutter.

In conclusion, the Asus ProArt PZ13 is a promising addition to the tablet market, offering a fresh perspective on what a mobile content creation device can be.
